How we build the numbers in your usage report

This page documents the methodology behind every number in the usage report. The rule that guides us is simple: when a figure is real, we show it as is; when it is an estimate, we use conservative assumptions and state them; and when it is an automatic inference, we are upfront about its limits.

The base assumption: 10 minutes per query

The report's time metrics all start from the same rule: each query a user makes in Magnar is worth, on average, 10 minutes of recovered work. A query is every message or instruction a user writes on the platform; for example, a question in the chat, a piece of legal research, a document they ask Magnar to review or draft.

Where does the 10-minute figure come from? Leading industry benchmarks have measured this impact by combining surveys of dozens of firms with real time trials. The results place the saving between 15 and 30 minutes per query, with most tasks completed 60% to 90% faster.

We take the floor of that range and apply a further discount: we would rather understate the result than inflate it, at least until we complete our own measurement with clients in the region.

Two clarifications:

• We count the queries users write, not the platform's internal activity. If Magnar takes ten steps to answer a single question, that is one query.
• Bulk processes are deliberately understated. A review of hundreds of documents in Tables counts as the queries that started it, not as each document processed, even though the real time recovered there is usually measured in hours.

Hours recovered and equivalent lawyers

With the base assumption, the rest is transparent arithmetic:

• Hours recovered = queries in the period × 10 minutes / 60.
• Equivalent lawyers = hours recovered ÷ 176 hours per month. Those 176 hours are an 8-hour day across 22 working days. It is an adjustable and deliberately demanding assumption: it does not deduct holidays, leave or vacation, so it tends to return fewer equivalent lawyers, not more.

An example with round numbers. If your team made 10,560 queries in the month, that is 105,600 minutes, or 1,760 hours recovered, which divided by 176 equals the contribution of 10 full-time lawyers.

Pages and case law

These two metrics rest on no assumption at all. Pages processed are counted directly from the documents Magnar analyzed in your vaults during the period. Case law sources correspond to the actual references saved in your team's conversations: every judgment cited in an answer.

How practice areas and task types are classified

Query classification by practice area and task type comes from the Practice map your organization's administrator configures in Magnar. The categories are the ones your own firm defined, not an automatic inference by the platform. If a query does not fit any configured category, it stays unclassified: we would rather show partial coverage than invent precision.
